Your home away from home in the Land of the Min Min Light
Experience cosy Boulia accommodation.
Welcome to our hometown Boulia, Queensland. Land of the Min Min Light & Capital of the Channel Country. Whether your stay is short or long, Boulia has something to offer everyone. We are a small community of around 200 people in the township and are 300km south of Mount Isa, 363km west of Winton, 492km north of Birdsville & 811km east of Alice Springs. We are the first point when coming off the long unsealed section of the Outback Way - Australia's longest shortcut from Cairns to Laverton in Western Australia. This road is also known as the Donohue Highway in the Queensland section.
Our weather has a variance of 40 degrees - summer gets up to 45 degrees celcius and the winter blows in the desert winds reducing the temperature to the single digits. Air conditioning, heating & firebuckets are very much established within the Boulia Community.
Our local economy is supported by small businesses that invest themselves in the betterment of our community.
We have a roadhouse, post office, hotel, motel, convenience store that has fresh fruit, veggies, meat, hardware supplies, tyre repairs & new tyres, freight, sports centre that hosts a 25m pool, air conditioned gym & basketball court, squash court, sensory play room.
Tourism aspects of our town: the visitor information centre - Min Min Encounter is a modern facility that boasts a 45 minute animatronic show in which the story of the Min Min lights (or the many versions of stories) are told by locally depicted characters. As you move through the scenes, you are immersed in the history of these mysterious lights as well the characters that have lived these experiences. This experience is quite unique, the sets of the scenes have all been designed to be authentically 'Boulia' with key parts of the assets being donated by locals around the region. Even the display of the 'Boulia' akubra's before you enter the show - you can feel the men & women that wore these & the blood sweat & tears that went into making this challenging country into a lifestyle & livelihood to support their dreams of prosperity.
The Boulia Heritage Complex is a home for many displays of the past - Marine Reptile Fossils that were extracted from the earth in our region by a dedicated human that found something, thought it was interesting & grew a passion from there. You can see the tribute to him & his contributions to this region at the Heritage Complex in the form of a bronze bust. You will find many displays, old world medical tools, machinery from yesteryear, a stone house with pre-airconditioning cooling - underground cellar. Every item is local, donated in support of remembering the history & traditions that have shaped these remote communities that have built legacies for generations.
The Burke River - a significant part of the channel country that annually completes its designated task of being a primary thoroughfare in an expansive river system to traverse the abundance of rain that blesses the ground down to lake eyre - to then replenish the Great Artesian Basin that without we would not have a water source. Many a beautiful moment has been had watching the sun rise or set on the bridge of the Burke.
